Digital Exclusion
What does Digital Exclusion mean?
In 2024 technology and online services have become integral in our day to day lives. The term ‘Digital Exclusion’ refers to the idea that a large amount of the population have been left behind, with companies and services not considering those people with no ability to access digital or online platforms.
Who might be digitally excluded?
The people who have been affected the most (in the UK) are primarily those aged 70 or over. In 2023 the UK Consumer Digital Index from Lloyds Bank showed that 2.1 million people in the UK are offline and 4.7 million people have no access to the internet. There are of course many reasons for why this might be, but the most likely cause of this is the Cost-of-Living-Crisis.
The Digital Poverty Alliance discovered that approximately 13-19 million people over the age of 16 are experiencing some form of digital poverty. Out of those 13-19 million people, 20% are children. It is also said that people who are unemployed are 2-3 times more likely to be in digital poverty.
To really magnify the size of this problem, we can confirm that globally, almost three billion people are digitally excluded.
Digital exclusion really does apply to a vast amount of people, irrespective of age, background or culture.
Our Approach
We at ComuSpace understand the importance of ensuring that everyone can access our services, whether that be in person or online.
With the majority of our day to day tasks having been moved online, we are here to provide the technology, the guidance and the company to help you navigate through the transition to online services.
Whether it be online-banking, healthcare services, utilities, or creating a CV to apply for employment, we are here to help. Our community sessions will bring together like-minded people who all need a little help to be able to perform these tasks online.
Our sessions are not limited to these areas, we will be happy to help people who are struggling with online or digital platforms, but we will run focus groups on specific topics, allowing people to learn together.
Our aim is to lessen the impact digital exclusion has within our communities.
